Yoga is a journey, not a destination

I am constantly reminded that I am on this journey, this path, this new found way towards freedom and happiness. For many years I have suffered, but now I stop worrying and I try to seek joy from something greater than myself. Life will always be full of ups and downs, highs and lows, it is how you respond that makes all the difference.

Even when I have a dark day, I can see the glimpses of light and I know that I am going to be OK. Whether I see them by flowing on my mat, taking some time out to breathe or just by grounding myself in the present. What I do know is without returning to the mental and physical practices, the job of healing is more challenging. Yoga can be a lifeline---won't you join me in finding it?

ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Sally and I am a certified, registered 500-hour yoga teacher. Yoga is to me, a constant evolving ride: it never truly ends, though once you start, you may never get off. The body naturally responds to yoga as a practice, be it through doing mindful breathing, physical asana poses, or through enriching and strengthening my mind. Yoga leads the body to crave a better existence, whether that be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.

My personal yoga journey started over 30 years ago, although it did not start out well. I struggled with depression, self confidence issues, eating disorders and other hardships. Every day was a constant battle—was I going to have a good day, or a bad one? Would I make it through the day, or would I fall into a dark pit of sadness and loneliness? I would put on a happy face and make jokes to make people laugh, all to mask the pain I was in. This gradually became my norm, and I’d think, “I am really not who you think I am, but I will just keep pretending.”

Years later, through renewing my faith, counseling, and many tears, I started to break through my self-destructing lifestyle. Although I had first first learned about yoga through a book my sister gave to me in 1993, I did not practice yoga or start training in any way until I moved to New York City after being in the Peace Corps for several years.  On a random February morning, I had decided to take a class in the city. The instructor had us sit in child’s pose to finish the class, telling us to “let go of anything that is holding you back, and allow your body to regrow itself—just like how you trim a rose bush so that it grows stronger and more vibrant, so can you!” Once she said these words, I began to cry uncontrollably into my mat, trying to control the tears but not being able to. I stayed there for a long time, hoping everyone would leave the room and not see me crying…but when I looked over, I saw another person wipe away her tears. Another person was being consoled by a fellow participant because she too was struggling while on her mat. It was exactly as she said—we were all being reborn! It was spiritual, magical and healing. I couldn’t wait to come back the following week. I had found my happy place.

I got my first yoga certification and continued on to get my advanced yoga certification. It was during this time that I narrowed down my niches, and worked on yoga for depression, anxiety, and for women in menopause. I listened to my calling as both a teacher and a healer, and learned to rely on my heart, having its true power come from God and his teachings. I wanted to give back to what was given to me; to help those that were struggling in life or suffering under its hardships. Lastly, I wanted to become a symbol of strength and empowerment for women who are going through any stage of menopause.to become good, strong and flexible. My main mission is to help these women feel they have it under control and to live their best, fruitful years, post-fertility.

This photo of me above was taken on the beach near my house. I was 55 years old then, way past what is typically considered my prime—and yet, I look and feel better than I have my entire life.  By training with me, you can feel the same way I do—balanced, healthy, and better than ever before. Won’t you join me on this journey of self-discovery?
